What's Going On
Marvin Gaye
From the beginning introduction that sounds like a laid-back 70's party scene with dialogue comprised of greetings such as "What's happenin' man?" to the bongo-filled backbeat that slowly fades out to end the album on side 'B', this album is pure soul music with just enough jazz thrown in to make it stand out from the rest.

Live Shows
Jazz in Buenos Aires: Thelonious Club
The band kicked ass: Levas Cruzadas, a 9-piece brass band: two trumpets, two trombones, three saxes, a tuba player playing the bass parts, and a drummer. Their sound was based in New Orleans jazz, but they also had a Balkan music side, as well as an experimental side, and a South American attitude.

Dan Deacon: A Genius, Among Many Other Things
Something about his music, and his performance of it, is undeniable in its energy; everyone in the auditorium was brought to an elevated state by his music. It certainly seems to be Deacon’s goal to involve his audience in his music, for them to get lost in it and be part of it; on this night he robustly succeeded.

Bill Callahan at Bottom Lounge, 6/19/2009
Callahan is not necessarily known for being a hard rocker, but make no mistake: this band was kicking ass and taking names. Callahan’s songs, without losing their subtlety and precision, were given a harder edge than they possess on record; there was a certain underlying drive beneath it all.
